When I heard that one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, I thought about people I know and if any of them had been diagnosed. I realized that I have a good friend who lost his mom, a cousin who lost her mother-in-law, and a friend Vicki who is a breast cancer SURVIVOR!! All of these people in my life have been affected by breast cancer. I don't have a lot of money, and I can't find a cure for cancer, but I found out that there was something that I could do. I'm walking in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Breast Cancer 3-Day November 7-9, 2008. It's a three-day, 60-mile (yes, SIXTY-MILE) walk that raises funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. The walk was begun because everyone deserves a lifetime. Every mother, every sister, every daughter, every family member male or female deserves to know a life free from breast cancer. It's going to be tough to fit fundraising and training into my busy schedule, but I know I can do it. I'm going to raise $5000.00 for the cause. Here's where you come in. Boobies, Breasts, Knockers, Hooters, etc. Now I have your attention, I have something very exciting to anounce! I just signed up for the Breast Cancer 3-Day! What does this mean and why am I so excited? Well, it means I will be walking 60 (yes SIXTY) miles in three days AND I will be raising LOTS of money for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research!! YAY! This also means I am going to be training like crazy between now and November; AND I will be soliciting EVERYONE I KNOW for donations! I will keep you all posted and hope you will all cheer me on in this incredible challenge! I also hope you will donate. I will have a website set up soon and you will know when I do! I am so excited and a little afraid of the challenges I will face. Of course, this doesn't compare to the challenges women diagnosed with breast cancer face.

Hello hello! Lupe & I have been renovating the kitchen and dining room. The last time it had a "makeover" was by the previous owners sometime in the mid-80s. It was "Kuntry Kute" - ACK! We have stripped every last bit of country (slate blue & dusty rose) from the conjoined rooms and have updated with snazzy black & white tiled floors, sponge painted walls in gold tones, crackle painted cabinets and trim... Today's projects are painting the lower cabinets (red wine color) and sponging the walls with the 3rd color (Buried Treasure... who names paint?? lol). The place is looking really good and unfortunately will spawn projects all over the house... next up will mist likely be the living room as it is tied to the dining room... Keep an eye open for an upcoming slideshow of the progress. M.

Ok, so I have the LAMEST travel blog ever, but DAMN internet access abroad was either :

I am back at home now and will have time to get this thing up to speed. Selective speed... I took over 750 photos in Ireland and another 300+ in Germany & France.

In short I had a wonderful time in Europe (as always) and am already trying to figure out how to get back soon. I am tired... long trip home (more about that later).

Hello all. I had a fantastic birthday on Friday and a wonderful birthday weekend. Lupe woke me up on Friday with candlelit chocolate cake and coffee... What a great breakfast!! Then there was a beautiful bouquet of pink lilies waiting for me in the living room and my surprise gift.... A gorgeous watch!! (see pic) Yea Lupe! I had the first meeting for the trip to France... the itinerary was a great b-day gift... haha More info on that to post later. My Mom & Charles sent me a beautiful bouquet of Gerbera Daisies. That Lupe is a sneaky one... He took me for an "overnight trip" to Dallas (Addison) to Texas de Brazil for dinner, a night in a hotel and shopping the next day at my favorites... Crate & Barrel and Williams-Sonoma... Well, all that AND a new watch... He is a keeper!! We had a super fabulous meal at TdB ( www.texasdebrazil.com) then fun times at the Galleria the next day. Saturday was rounded out with our first trip to the Dallas Arboretum ( www.dallasarboretum.org ) to view Dallas Blooms 2006 (pics to follow at a later date). We finished our day with his parents treating us to dinner and then came home for video games... which we are both terrible at, but have fun nonetheless. Today I met up with a dear friend whom I do not get to see very often. She took me out for a fabulous meal of Lebanese food at Hedary's ( http://www.hedarys.com/) in Fort Worth. It was a great weekend! I think I am gonna love being 34!!! It has started off so darn well!! :)

My trip to France is becoming more and more of a reality!! I purchased my airline tickets yesterday, I filled out scholarship applications today and Friday (my 34th b-day) we have our very first informational meeting for all participants!!! Hellloooooo family and friends! I have only nerdy school news to post.... I AM GOING TO PARIS, FRANCE FOR THE SUMMER SESSION!!!!! And I am a weee bit excited about it!! I am going to do a study abroad in Normandy/Paris for 5 weeks this summer (May-June). What an absolutely fitting way to finish up my 16-year quest for a Bachelor's Degree!!! This is the hotel I will be in the first night: http://www.maryshotel.com/index-ang.htm# there is a little video of it on the link... It is a hostel-type hotel. The video clip makes me laugh... the close-ups of the salle de bains (bathroom) is my favorite (ha ha). It does show a triple room, which is what we will be in the 1st night. Then our group hops a bus to a village in Normandy where we will be staying in a farm house for a full week of study and village life. Then back to Paris! Yea, so I am a total slacker-blogger... You would think I would have something to say EVERY DAY seeing as I am online EVERY DAY! Oh jeez... well, I am a procrastinator extraordinaire... And a poor manager of my time... well it depends on what it is. There are some things I will do right away, like check my e-mail... haha I have started my final full semester of college! Yipee! I am rounding out my History major this Spring with courses in African-American History (since 1865), WWII, and History in Film. The French minor is being buoyed by an Advanced Conversation & Phonetics class. Bien Sur! I will have 2 upper level French courses and a Math course to take this summer and then Commencement, Sweet Commencement in August! If I can figure out how to put a countdown on this blog I will! This degree has been 16-years in the making... expect one hell of a party in August!

Update: The gal from the car wreck, Charity, is fine. I talked to her before Christmas. She was lucky; no broken bones, no internal injuries. She was kept in the hospital for 4 days for observation though for the seizures.

Wedding Photos!

Ok, here is the first installment of my Korea trip. I thought I would begin with what most folks are interested in... Kevin & Nahee's wedding. The wedding was held at the chapel on the Korean Military Academy (Korea's Westpoint). Nahee's brother graduated from there, so they could use the facilities. It was Saturday, December 17th and it was FREEZING (literally). Saturday was the coldest day in Korea in the last 40 years. Brrrr.

Nahee was gorgeous and Kevin was quite smart looking in his suit and pink tie. They had a full Catholic service, communion and all. There were readings, hymns and songs by a choir... all this in Korean, mind you. We just stood up and sat back down when everyone else did.. ha ha.

There were about 125 people, or so, there. It was nice. There was a huge buffet afterwards including spaghetti & tomato sauce, a Waldorf-y like apple salad, whole fish, sashimi, rice, octopus & squid, oysters on the half-shell, pumpkin soup (yummy), Korean noodles, and so much I cannot remember!!! There was so much food. Of course, there was beer and soda and Korean "rotgut" Soju . It sort of tastes like a combination of lighter fluid and nail polish remover, mm mm good. Ha ha.

A fun time was had by all. Kevin made his bride laugh throughout the entire ceremony. He did a great job on his Korean speaking parts, only stumbling once on a very large part of what I assumed were the vows. Here are the photos!

Ok, I just had one of the most frightening experiences of my life... about 8:30pm tonihgt, on I-30 heading into Dallas. I was on my way to pick up Mom and Charles from Love Field and it was raining. Suddenly out of nowhere a car from the inside lane came perpendicular to my car (outside lane) , hit the concrete thing and flipped over in from of me. I got around the car, stopped and called 911. I just didn't want there to be a dead body in there when I got to the car. Me and a few others who stopped ran to the car there was a girl inside and she was sitting on the ceiling of the car. She was crying and shaking and holding her head, but no blood. she was talking and breathing... she wanted out of the upside-down car. We tried to make her stay in until the ambulance came, but she wanted out. A few of us got her out of the passenger door and got her to the side of the road. Her name is Chastity. Me and a Hispanic lady made her sit down. We held her hands and told her the ambulance was coming. Then she said "Seizure, I am gonna have a seizure," and passed out. We were trying to lay her down when she began to convulse violently. It was so scary. I was at her head and trying to keep her from smahing her head into the tarmac. Oh man, it was crazy, like something on TV. It was pouring rain, the only light was from car headlights, her car was upside down on the freeway, here I am on the side of the road in my dressy work clothes squatting down and trying to keep a convulsing stanger from hurting herself. She seized a few more times. By now, the lady had called for her teen daughter to come help us, everyone else had left. The daughter wedged her knees under Chastity's shoulders and I was still trying to cradle her head. I know it was probably only 5 minutes until the fire trucks adn ambulance came, but it seemed like I held her head forever. I didn't even realize how wet and cold I was until I got back into my car. Before we got her out of the car, she asked for a phone and used mine to dial a friend. I talked to the friend who was going to call Chastity's mom. I called her back when I knew where the ambulance was taking her. Man, I hope I never get a call like that from a stranger, "Hi, um your friend_______ was in a car accident, they are going to such-and-such hospital." I think I will call that number when I get back from Korea, to see how Chastity did. I know she is epileptic, she had on a Medical Alert bracelt. It is so strange, human behavior. I was stroking her hair and telling her it was all going to be ok. I didn't even know her, had never seen her before. The other lady kept telling her, "It is OK, you are not alone, we are right here. We will be here with you when the ambulance comes." The paramedics were great. They got to her really quickly and double checked to make sure none of us had been injured. It was a single car accident, thankfully. I hope she is going to be ok. I need a stiff drink and a hot bath.

Ok... this is the cutest thing ever and I have no way of photographing it!!! I am working on a research paper, here on ye olde lappe toppe. I have the laptop on a huge pillow from the back of our couch on my lap.... Nushka, my littlest kitty just curled up behind the laptop screen and laid down to nap!!! I think she is there, not to cuddle me, but because it is pretty warm there... the fan for the laptop blows that-a-way.... I am kinda liking the heat from the laptop myself... it is actually FREEZING here in the Lone Star State!!! Like ice and everything!! It is weird! We are having our 2-days of winter! :) Dear Santa, I would like a webcam and/or digital camera this year! Mylynka Ok... I love my cats like they are my babies... yes, I know... Crazy Cat Lady......

As the e-mail I sent out to most everyone said, I am going to Korea. Well, not just me, but Mom and Charles, too. Lupe can't go, unfortunately... He has no passport. :( Anyhoo... We leave at 9am on Wed. Dec. 14th and arrive in Seoul, South Korea around 6pm on the 15th. It is a LOOOONG flight (about 16-18 hours) and there is a +15hr time difference. Kevin and Nahee are supposed to take us all over Seoul on the 16th, the wedding is the 17th, Mom & Charles depart the 18th and I get 1 extra day with the newlyweds and leave on the 19th. We are all going to be staying at Nahee's family home with her parents, brother, sister and young cousin. I am looking forward to this cultural immersion! It is going to be a whirlwind trip for sure, but I am sure it will whet my appetite for future trips. On another note, I have an upper respiratory infection as of today... bummer. I should be (better be!!) well in time to board the plane! Working with the unwashed masses has its drawbacks this time of year.... LOL.
